Plans to use old Forest Service HQ for museum abandoned

The Graham County commission voted unanimously Friday to abandon plans to convert the old Forest Service headquarters on Massey Branch Road into a museum.

The potential of leasing the old headquarters for a heritage museum had been discussed for several years. The building is paneled with wood from just about every type of tree found in the Southern Appalachians and is on a popular tourists’ route leading to the Cherohala Skyway.

Commissioner wants to annex part of Swain County

A Graham County commissioner wants the county to ask the state Legislature to annex part of Swain County into Graham County because the county already provides much of the services — including rescue — in the area.

Commissioner Sandra Smith said part of Swain County between Calderwood, Deals Gap and Fontana ought to be annexed into Graham County.

Shuler requests funding for county's Corridor K

A small portion of the money needed for the much-debated Corridor K route in Graham County has been requested by Congressman Heath Shuler in the upcoming transportation reauthorization bill.

Doug Abrahms, Shuler’s communication director, said $55.5 million was requested to acquire right of way, mitigation and construction of Corridor K from N.C. 143 to N.C. 129.

Soccer becoming biggest attraction for youth sports

Heritage Festival gears up in downtown Robbinsville

Thumbnail July Fourth is just around the corner and thanks to several local citizens, downtown Robbinsville will once again be the place to be for the holiday celebration.

The festival kicks off Friday at noon with live music, crafters, artists, and commercial and food vendors.
