Sensational Seth sets record first time out
So much for practice makes perfect.
The age-old adage doesn’t seem to apply to Robbinsville Middle School track star Seth Lawson.
“Last week at practice, in between running 200-meter training sprints, Seth, out of curiosity, jumped over the bar at the high jump area,” recalled The Graham Star photographer Byron Housley.
Yes, jumped over. Not tried to jump over. Lawson cleared it. And a high jumper was born.
The bar was set at 5’ 2” when Lawson made his impromptu jump. The school record is 5’ 4”.
Coach Stuart Nelms noticed and adjusted his line-up against Hayesville last week to see how Lawson would perform in competiton.
It turned out to be a shrewd move. Lawson tied the Robbinsville Middle School high jump record by clearling 5’ 4”.
Clayson Lane also cleared 5’ 4”.
But Lawson wasn’t finished. He cleared 5’ 5” ... 5’ 6” and then 5’ 7”.
Lawson’s tremendous performance only earned him a second-place finish in the event, but that pales when you consider the bettered the school record by 3 inches – in the first meet he competed as a high jumper.
“He did very well and he’s a great competitor,” remarked Nelms, who has watched Lawson consistently win the long jump and dashes.
