Sports delayed ... again

High school athletes statewide had Sept. 1 circled on their calendars.

That was the day the N.C. High School Athletic Association had anticipated moving forward with the 2020-21 sports season. However, Gov. Roy Cooper’s announcement on Aug. 5 that the state would remain under Phase 2 restrictions until at least Sept. 11 kiboshed that plan.

The athletic association will have to re-think its entire strategy, with Commissioner Que Tucker hopeful that plans will be announced no later than Monday.

“We want to play sports during this upcoming school year and are making plans to do so,” an Aug. 6 statement issued by Tucker reads. “However, the health and safety of all participants, including coaches and other essential staff, will be a priority as decisions and plans are made.”
