* During Easter season, thoughts are turned toward a cross. John and Ginny Brand of Robbinsville were raising four miniature donkeys, marked with a cross on their back. The donkey carrying Jesus into Jerusalem was present at the crucifixion and as the donkey turned away from the cross, a shadow of the cross fell onto its back.

* The Black Knights baseball team earned their first victory of the season, defeating Highlands 11-4. Rance Shuler earned the win for Robbinsville, recording 5 ⅓ innings on the mound. Patrick Davis went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs. Myles Webster was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Kyle Garland was 2-for-5 with 3 RBIs.

* The gated entrance to Tellico Road provided a view of Comet Hyakutake, named after a Japanese astronomer who first saw the comet on Jan. 30. This comet could be seen through the end of April. According to Newsweek magazine, “Its appearance and discovery took the entire scientific community by surprise; a reminder that the hand of God still turns the universe.”

* Braving snow-filled mountains, 52 fishermen entered the annual Buddy Bass Fishing Tournament, hosted by Fontana Village Resort. David Kerr, general manager of Fontana Village, awarded prizes to the winners. David Anderson and Brett Williams took first place, winning $650; Kenny Birchfield and Travis Hooper took second place, winning $325.

* Two scholars from the People’s Republic of China lectured at Robbinsville High School, as part of a faculty exchange program. The lectures included various aspects of China’s modernization since the Cultural Revolution of 1966-76. The hope was that children would gain a better understanding of these countries.

* For the first time in history, Robbinsville’s baseball team won over Murphy, 9-4. John Barlow pitched seven innings, struck out six, walked five and allowed only two hits. Good defense from the Knights kept Murphy from scoring. Rex Smith was 2-for-3 at the plate, with three RBIs.
