10 years ago

* More than a pound of marijuana was seized in an indoor-pot operation in the Sweetgum area. Graham County Sheriff Mickey Anderson said that Richard Pullium would face numerous charges, including manufacturing marijuana with intent to distribute, and felony possession and possession of paraphernalia, involving the indoor resident operation.

* A Texas man was killed in a motorcycle accident on N.C. Highway 28 near Fontana, when he lost control of his bike. State Trooper A.C. Ammons said that Jerry Fuller was traveling too fast for the curve. A rescue helicopter was called to the scene, but the victim passed before its arrival.

25 years ago

* Cherokee truck driver Dennis Coons turned over his vehicle, sliding down the bank on N.C. Highway 143. After checking his load, Coons fought his way up the bank. He explained that he thought driving on the shoulder of the road would compensate for a shifting load, but there were no shoulders in Stecoah.

* The Lady Knights varsity softball team were 5-3. In the most recent game against Hendersonville, the Knights were behind 11-1, but turned it around in the third inning to make a 15-run comeback and beat the Lady Cats by 10 runs.

50 years ago

* In observance of “Postal Week,” the Robbinsville Post Office joined the country’s 31,000 other post offices in issuing 10 special stamps to honor the postal employee. The postal week observance was an appropriate occasion for recognition to the vital responsibilities assigned to the essential mail service.

* Karen Taylor, a very active Graham County 4-H club member, was announced the “Western District Winner of the Garden Horticulture Project.” Her winning honor was the result of outstanding work over the past three years. Her membership in the 4-H club was served at Bear Creek.
