Young entrepreneur has one-stop shop for furry friends
Tallulah – All of us have heard the saying, “Find a job you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”
If you don’t believe it, just ask 19-year-old Kensley Phillips.
Phillips is proof that passion can become profit and loving what you do is just gravy on the dog bone.
Graduating from high school with an associate’s degree from Tri-County Community College, she is not afraid of hard work. In fact – while in high school – she and friend Desta Trammell ran a tasty business called “Makin’ Dough,” which specialized in baking holiday treats. That vision of entrepreneurship has only grown, as Phillips attends East Carolina University and plans to finish her online degree in May of 2025 at the ripe old age of 20.
Phillips is currently a teacher’s assistant at Robbinsville Elementary School. She also helps coach varsity volleyball, middle school track and field, and varsity basketball – all while making the Dean’s List last semester at East Carolina University.
Phillips has always had a love for animals, with a special interest in dogs. She began boarding dogs in her home last year – so when the chance to purchase the kennel and dog wash became available, she seized the opportunity. She has been busy this spring setting up the kennels and giving The Dog Wash a fresh coat of paint.
The wash is stationed inside an air-conditioned facility, with towels, treats and of course, the self-service wash – which will give you a chance to scrub your pooch for 10 minutes, at $10. Additional time can be purchased if necessary.
There are currently seven bays for the kennels, which can board up to two dogs if the owner has a pair for boarding. The kennels are clean and cozy – complete with heating and air – so pups are sure to enjoy their stay.
“I’ve always had a passion for animals and I am excited to be able to offer these services,” Phillips said.
Phillips has also been on a mission to find homes for strays. She has joined forces with the Marble-based Valley River Humane Society to get pets and strays spayed and neutered.
She hopes to offer a free rabies clinic onsite soon and to partner with other local groups on upcoming projects.
Both K’s Kennels and The Dog Wash are located at 2322 Tallulah Road; the kennels are available by appointment only, while the wash is open 24 hours a day.
