Tuskeegee – As an example of how quickly mountain weather can change, locals experienced snowfall and a brush fire in the same week.
Graham County 911 was notified of a brush fire near Whiteside Gap Road in the Lower Sawyers Creek area around 1:20 p.m., Jan. 15.
A member of the Stecoah Fire Department arrived on the scene first and reported that the wind was pushing the fire and that one home was in danger. It was later determined that the blaze came within 50 feet of the residence.
Firefighters with the N.C. Forest Service and U.S. Forest Service arrived and began constructing a control line around the fire.
The fire was contained after burning less than an acre of private property and was caused by someone burning debris.
