A resident from the upper section of Mountain Creek called the Graham County 911 Center to report a brush fire visible from his home around 7:15 p.m. Monday.
Firefighters with the Graham County Fire Department, N.C. Forest Service, and U.S. Forest Service responded to the fire, which was caused by a downed power line. Duke Energy personnel shut the electricity off along the line – which serves the 911 equipment atop Wauchecha Bald – for the safety of the firefighters.
The fire burned one acre, with part of the fire on private land and part on U.S. Forest Service land. The fire was contained around 10:00 p.m.
Firefighters were back on the scene Tuesday morning, to improve the fire lines and extinguish hot spots within the perimeter.
