There was little rest for the weary, as U.S. Forest Service firefighters were atop Graham County’s highest mountain – Big Huckleberry – off the Cherohala Skyway on March 10.
A campfire had escaped into the grassy area and was controlled after burning less than an acre.
At 5,560 feet in elevation, the mountain is known for its windy conditions and unpredictable weather. With the current dry weather, fires can easily get out of control and spread quickly.
Graham County Fire and Rescue personnel responded to another small fire on River Drive in the Tallulah area Monday night. The blaze was started by debris burning and contained at less than an acre of damage.
Graham County Fire and Rescue and the N.C. Forest Service were later dispatched to a brushfire at off Five Points Road shortly after 4:30 p.m., March 13. A person was burning debris when the fire escaped into nearby brush.
The fire was contained after burning less than an acre of private property.
Stecoah Fire and Rescue then joined both the N.C. and U.S. Forest services in responding to a small fire caused by a power line issue near Hallandson Hideaway in the Lower Sawyers Creek Road area around 6:20 p.m., Saturday. The blaze was quickly extinguished.
