Deep Creek – A lost hiker was located after a brief search Oct. 30.
Sarah Schuster, 38, had gone on a hike alone into the Deep Creek area of Graham County from a trailhead parking area on Maple Springs Road.
On her return, she got off the trail and became lost. Schuster had a GPS locater with her and was able to text her husband Jared about the situation. He went to the general location and was able to make voice contact with her, although it sounded as if she was a long distance off. He had to walk some distance for a cell phone signal, before he placed a call to Graham County 911 around 4:30 p.m.
Graham County Rescue Squad’s Tory Lynnes located Schuster – who was not injured – about 700 feet below the trail shortly after 6 p.m. Rescuers then escorted Schuster back to the trailhead parking area and arrived around 7 p.m.
The search was in the general area of where a plane crashed on Nov. 4, 1998 and wasn’t found until almost six years later.
