Snowbird – The Graham County 911 Center received an SOS from a device that can send messages via satellite from a hiker around 5:20 p.m., Saturday.
Corey Williams – 34, of Huntsville, Ala. – had hiked to the Big Falls area of Snowbird Creek on Friday, where he set up camp around four miles into the woods.
Williams had planned on coming out after camping one more night and was cutting campfire wood with a hatchet Saturday, when he severely cut his hand. His hand was bleeding freely, but he was able to wrap a shirt around the wound and stop the bleeding.
Williams knew that he still needed help in getting out and sent the message for help.
Tory Lynnes of the Graham County Rescue Squad located Williams and assisted him in getting back to his vehicle, where Graham County EMS had an ambulance waiting. The crew rewrapped the wound and Williams made the decision to drive himself to Murphy Medical Center for further treatment.
