Robbinsville – Graham County commissioners will be using COVID-19 relief money to buy school supplies for Graham County Schools students from kindergarten through fifth grade this semester.
The Board of Commissioners voted to apply American Rescue Plan Act funds to purchase school supplies for each student from the lists given by each grade.
“Backpacks will be packed and awaiting the students in their classrooms on the first day of school,” Kim Crisp, clerk to the board, said on her Facebook wall.
“The board wanted to help the parents with this expense,” Crisp told The Graham Star on Tuesday. “We purchased all school supplies for every child K-5th from the list that the teacher supplied. Backpacks, earphones, earbuds, crayons, erasers, pencils, pouches, composition books, water bottles, folders, glue sticks, markers, binders, Clorox wipes, Kleenex, scissors, highlighters, Germ-X, clipboards, notebook paper, colored pencils, index cards.”
Crisp said she ordered for 82 kindergarteners, 99 first graders, 80 second graders, 96 third graders, 75 fourth graders and 88 fifth graders.
News was met with delight by Graham County Schools.
“RES (Robbinsville Elementary School) would like to THANK the Graham County Commissioners for their contribution to our students’ success!,” the school announced on its Facebook page. “The Graham County Commissioners are buying all K-5 students a backpack, and all student supplies!!! Thank you our County Commissioners!!”
Graham County Schools Superintendent Angie Knight said the donated school supplies will come in handy for cash-strapped families in the current economic environment.
“I’m sure the citizens of Graham County are most appreciative of the kind gesture from the Board of Commissioners for their generous donation of a backpack and school supplies for all students in Kindergarten-5th grades,” Knight said.
