The Graham Star received the following information from Graham County government around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
To achieve cost-savings for the taxpayers of Graham County – and safeguard the wellbeing and safety of county employees – the Graham County Board of Commissioners and the county’s sanitation department closed five of its sanitation sites, effective Jan. 1.
Sites that are now closed to all garbage are Bear Creek (off Tallulah Road), Brooks Cove (146 Rhymers Ferry Road), Gladdens Creek, Meadow Branch and Snowbird (3224 Snowbird Road).
Please be aware per North Carolina General Statute 153A-123, it is a punishable offense to dump any illegal garbage at the aforementioned sites.
Moving forward, Graham County Sanitation will man and operate the following three sites seven days a week, during the following hours:
* East Buffalo (190 East Buffalo Circle): 7:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m., Monday-Saturday; 1-6 p.m. Sundays.
* Snowbird Transfer Station (400 Snowbird Road): 7:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m., Monday-Saturday; 1-6 p.m. Sundays.
* Stecoah/Johnson Gap (460 Fontana Road): 7:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m., Monday-Saturday; 1-6 p.m. Sundays.
The sanitation department will adjust operating hours if necessary and as needed to be more convenient for the taxpayers of Graham County. Officials are diligently working on getting recycling cans and cardboard containers for convenient access at all sites. Currently, all metal recyclables must be taken to 400 Snowbird Road, but efforts are underway to accept metal recycling at all sites.
There is no charge for residential bagged garbage, recycling, cardboard, metal, or other materials. Fees may be imposed for non-residential bagged garbage.
If you have any questions or comments about the information listed above, please contact the Graham County Sanitation Department at (828) 479-9369, between the hours of 6:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.
