Lake Santeetlah – One local municipality is continuing to work toward standardized speed limits.
At the advice of town attorney Brian Gulden, the Town of Lake Santeetlah Council voted to hold a public hearing on a 10 or 15 mile per hour speed limit on Oct. 26.
Gulden explained at the Sept. 9 council meeting that the town would be required to hold a public hearing prior to changing speed limits.
“Because speed limits are a function of the law, you are required to hold a public hearing,” Gulden said. “You will need to hold a public hearing and adopt an ordinance.”
Councilman Keith Predmore said he was concerned about the speed limit change coming from the request of a single resident.
“I need to know that there’s justification before we start running rampant, doing things that one person wants,” Predmore said.
The board also discussed planned speed bumps or speed humps for Lakeside Drive as part of the same program as the proposed speed limit change. Hulden said the board would not have to hold a public hearing for the speed bumps or speed humps and signs warning drivers of their presence.
However, the town still plans to discuss the plan with residents before going through with it.
Mayor Jim Hager said he would prefer the town install speed bumps.
“Humps don’t slow anybody down,” Hager said.
Additionally, the board discussed signage for the proposed changes, with the board leaning toward using standard department of transportation signs to ensure clarity for motorists.
