Changes made to operating hours at remaining locations
After engaging with the public during a May 8 hearing, Graham County has announced new operational procedures for its sanitation sites.
The biggest change involves the closure of Bear Creek and Snowbird's convenience centers, which becomes effective Wednesday, July 1. The county incurred costs to improve both sites before they were re-opened last year – including the replacement of fencing around the perimeter.
Elsewhere, sites in the East Buffalo and Stecoah communities will only be open four days a week. Also beginning July 1, the hours of operation will be as follows:
* Tuesdays: 7:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.;
* Thursdays: 10:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.;
* Saturdays: 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.;
* Sundays: 1-5 p.m.
A press release issued by the county Tuesday cited the need to "continue providing solid waste services while achieving necessary cost savings and operational efficiencies."
"County officials stated that the changes are intended to maintain dependable sanitation services for residents while reducing operational expenses and improving efficiency within the county's budget constraints," the release continued. "Graham County remains committed to providing essential services to our citizens in a fiscally responsible manner.
"These adjustments allow us to continue offering sanitation services across the county while realizing meaningful cost savings for taxpayers."
The Graham County Sanitation Department's main location at 302 Snowbird Road will remain accessible 24 hours a day. Anyone wishing to dispose of non-household garbage should call 828-479-9369.
Questions about the changes were directed to the county's administrative offices, which can be reached at 828-479-7960.
