Stecoah – Investigators are still trying to narrow down the culprit behind a fire that destroyed a long-time staple of the community.
Around 9:30 p.m. Aug. 2, crews from seven different fire departments – in two counties – were dispatched to the Stecoah Diner on U.S. 28 North. Firefighters combated the blaze until late into the night, but were unable to save the structure.
Stecoah Fire Chief Lynn Cody said Tuesday morning that the only thing for certain is that the fire started in the kitchen area, but investigators were looking at electrical wiring as a potential cause.
The owners of the building did not have insurance, but a GoFundMe page has been started to help recoup costs. As of noon Tuesday, $1,565 of a $50,000 goal had been met. Local restauranter Blake Orr has also organized a fundraiser, to be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at The Hub.
