Fleeing, theft leads to arrests

The Graham County Sheriff’s Office has had a busy past few weeks.

Following an individual taking off during a traffic stop, two more suspects were apprehended and charged with breaking and entering. Deputies pulled over Gregory A. Orr, 41, of Spring Hill Road, on Ford Street on Aug. 20 after noticing an expired tag. While running Orr’s tag, it was discovered that he was wanted for felony probation violations.

After Orr was informed of the violations, he took off and led deputies on a high-speed chase through a school zone. Orr ignored multiple traffic signage, and deputies said he exceeded 80 mph while traveling south on U.S. 129. The chase ended when Orr returned to his residence, where he was promptly captured.

Orr was charged with fleeing/eluding arrest with a motor vehicle, resisting a public officer, an expired inspection sticker and the aforementioned probation violations. He will appear in Graham County Court on Wednesday.

Breaking, entering

Sheriff’s deputies were then called to a residence on Main Street on Aug. 25, when two people – Steven A. Mathis, 44, of Cornsilk Branch Road, and Bartlett E. West, 25, of Massey Branch Road – were identified by witnesses as leaving with multiple items.

Mathis and West were located within minutes of the report coming in. When Mathis’ car was searched, several of the reported stolen items from the Main Street residence were discovered.

Both were charged with three felonies each: breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, and possession of stolen goods. West will appear in Graham County Court on Wednesday, while Mathis is on the Nov. 16 docket.
