Robbinsville – At least five job openings are already forecasted for the 2020-21 school year at Robbinsville Elementary School.
During the Graham County Board of Education meeting Tuesday, Robbinsville Elementary Principal Jaime Hooper detailed each faculty member who was leaving as part of her principal’s report. Hooper added that each vacancy had its own unique set of circumstances, and while the search for new employees is underway, who is hired should not be a hasty decision.
“It’s not just about putting a body in a room; it’s about getting a good educator in the right spot, that’s best for our children,” Hooper said. “It scares me to have this many positions that I know I’m going to have to fill.”
Other news and notes from the meeting include:
* Robbinsville High Principal David Matheson announced that graduation has been scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, May 29, in the gymnasium. The baccalaureate ceremony will be held Wednesday, May 27, at Robbinsville First Baptist Church.
* Pre-kindergarten and kindergarten registration dates for the upcoming school year were tentatively announced to be Friday, May 1 (kindergarten), and Thursday and Friday, May 7-8 (pre-K).
* Superintendent Angie Knight added that while Graham County Schools have been out due to inclement weather eight different times this year, the decision to add 20 minutes to each school day has evened out the missed dates. However, Knight cautioned the board that if more than one day is missed from this point forward, students will have to make up the dates.
* The board unanimously approved Chloe Hyde and Liz Fennimore to be cafeteria substitutes, plus Erin Goodpaster as a volunteer with the track program.
* Knight emphasized that the high school will be hosting a Family Science Night on Thursday, May 12, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Knight estimated that 40-50 exhibits will be set up at the event.
