Robbinsville – A local woman has been charged with felonious attempted uttering, after an incident at the Shell gas station on Sept. 9.
Anita Marie Messer, 53, of 163 Five Point Road, approached the counter with a copy of The Graham Star before asking for a scratch-off lottery ticket and pack of cigarettes. After presenting the bill, the clerk noticed the size difference and the word “copy” stamped on both the front and back. A check with an ID pen confirmed the clerk’s suspicions.
According to the report filed by Michael Collins of the Graham County Sheriff’s Office, Messer informed the clerk after being confronted about the counterfeit bill that she was going to contact the individual who gave her the fake note. Messer then left the store.
After Collins arrived and confirmed Messer passing the bill via surveillance camera footage, charges were filed and Messer was arrested.
“It was very obvious,” Graham County Sheriff Jerry Crisp said. “It was like walking in with Monopoly money.”
