Board seeks civil penalty funds

Robbinsville – Tuesday’s Graham County Board of Education meeting saw members adopt a resolution to join other boards in the North Carolina School Board Association, to seek funds from civil penalties.

Currently, schools only receive a portion of criminal penalties, so the addition of civil penalty funds would be a boon to school coffers.

Other highlights of the meeting include:

* An upcoming $10,000 grant for adolescent literacy.

* The ongoing hiring of a replacement SRO, which was discussed in more detail during closed session.

* The Graham County Sheriff’s Office recently gifted $4,200 for the Safe Schools program.

The next meeting of the Graham County Board of Education will take place Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 10 a.m.
