Robbinsville – “Ballot duplication” was the central topic of a special called meeting of the Graham County Board of Elections on Friday.
At the recommendation of the N.C. Board of Elections, a resolution was adopted unanimously by the local board to ensure a smooth absentee voting process in Graham County.
Included is the protocol for fixing “damaged” ballots, or those the tabulator cannot read due to the condition they are received. The process will lead to a ballot being duplicated – not to be counted twice, only once – and for the purpose of making sure every ballot is counted.
An equal amount of representation from the board, split between Republicans and Democrats, must be present each time a ballot is duplicated to correct the damage – filling the role of Caller, Duplicator and Reviewer – to keep things in check throughout the repair process.
The resolution also makes reference to the increased number of absentee requests being received, statewide. As of Friday, Graham County had received 321 requests, while 136 had already been completed and returned.
Early voting begins Thursday, Oct. 15 and will be held at the Graham County Community Building, 196 Knight Street. The final day to request an absentee ballot is Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Copies of the full resolution can be obtained from the election office, 18 Court Street.
