Sweetwater – A Mount Holly man remains behind bars in Graham County, after leading Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and Graham County law enforcement on a car chase in an allegedly-stolen vehicle on Jan. 28.

According to court documents, 30-year-old Joshua Darrin Nutall allegedly stole a 2014 Kia Forte LX, valued at approximately $4,000. EBCI Officer Christopher Harris later attempted to stop Nutall for a license-plate violation, but Nutall instead opted to lead Harris – and eventually, Graham County deputies – on a chase on N.C. Highway 143. Nutall’s sprint ended with a spike strip, placed by N.C. State Trooper Ty Gibbs.

When stopped, Nutall was found to be in possession of a sawed-off, 12-gauge shotgun. Such modified weapons are illegal in the state of North Carolina.

For his spree, Nutall has been charged with the felonies of larceny of a motor vehicle, possession of a firearm by a felon, fleeing and eluding arrest with a motor vehicle, and possession of a weapon of mass destruction, as well as the misdemeanor of carrying a concealed gun. He was also charged with the traffic offenses of driving with license revoked and reckless driving to endanger.

Nutall has a prior felony conviction from May 2017 in Twiggs County, Ga. He is being held in the Graham County Detention Center on a $125,000 bond, and is scheduled to go before the magistrate on Monday, Feb. 22.
