Yellow Creek – Hikers from Cary – on a trip through the Slickrock section of the Joyce Kilmer-Slickrock Wilderness area – ran into problems late in the afternoon of Tuesday, June 9.
Graham County 911 first received a call requesting assistance in getting a woman up the trail into the Big Fat Gap Trailhead on Slickrock Road. Eventually, it was discovered that some of the group were lost.
Tory Lynnes and Larry Stone of the Graham County Rescue Squad responded to the call. Upon arrival, the woman that necessitated the 911 call was severely dehydrated and becoming sick and weak. The group had started up the trail to Big Fat Gap –ahead of the rest – and instead of taking the trail to Big Fat Gap, took the trail to Windy Gap instead.
When the rest of the group never caught up with everyone else, they realized something was wrong.
The dehydrated woman continued to make it to Big Fat Gap while the man went to look for the girls. Eventually, everyone was rounded up and the group made it to the trailhead.
