MountainTrue hosting tree, shrub sale

The annual native plant sale held by the Western Regional Office of MountainTrue – formerly known as the Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition – has now begun.

The fundraiser sells trees and shrubs that are native to our Southern Appalachian Mountains, with all proceeds benefiting MountainTrue’s work to remove nonnative invasive species.

“Many of the harmful invasive plants that we work so hard to eradicate are unknowingly planted by residents in landscaping,” says Tony Ward, Western Regional Program Director of MountainTrue. “The trees and shrubs available through our native plant sale inspire a sense of place and pride in our mountain communities, while also promoting wise stewardship and conservation of natural resources.”

Native trees and shrubs are a key component to the health of streams and lakes. They help prevent erosion, filter pollution from runoff, provide food and shelter for wildlife, and more. MountainTrue staff and volunteers spend a significant amount of time removing nonnative invasive plants from along streams and lake shorelines to ensure that the native vegetation stays healthy and functions to protect water quality.

Twenty-six species of native trees and shrubs are available in this year’s sale, including large shade trees, native ornamentals, pollinator species, and those particularly beneficial to wildlife. All plants are quality local nursery stock.

Pricing is $12 for 1-gallon, $15 for 2-gallon and $20 for 3-gallon potted plants.

Orders will be accepted through Monday, Nov. 11, while supplies last. To secure your species and size of choice, orders must be paid for at the time they are submitted.

Then, all orders can be picked up from the MountainTrue Western Regional Office parking lot at 90 Tennessee Street in downtown Murphy on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m.
