Robbinsville's Tobi Sellers was honored with the Judy Knox Scholarship by the N.C. Nurses Association.

Winston-Salem – At the 2019 N.C. Nurses Association convention in Winston-Salem, Robbinsville native and University of North Carolina in Wilmington student Tobi Sellers won the Judy Knox College Scholarship.

The scholarship helps fund studies at the Duke University School of Nursing in Durham. The association helps provide continuing education, networking, and legislative advocacy for registered nurses in our state.

Association President Dennis Taylor praised attendees, saying, "Nursing is strong in North Carolina as evidenced by the great work by nurses to improve care, reduce cost and increase access to all North Carolinians."

This certainly applies to scholarship-winner Sellers, who dreamed of nursing since she was in high school.

"When I became a nurse, I knew I had chosen the right field," Sellers said.

"I enjoy helping people feel better and making them comfortable in what can be their worst situations. Being a nurse means that I get to touch the lives of my patients each and every day in many different aspects of their lives."

Sellers graduated from Murphy High School, then studied at Tri-County Community College’s Graham County Center before matriculating to UNC-Wilmington. She now hopes to earn her bachelor's degree before studying to become a nurse practitioner.

"Patients trust me with their health care every day, and by receiving this scholarship, I can ensure that my patients are receiving the highest quality care by employing evidence-based research and findings into my practice," said Sellers.

After completing her education, Sellers plans to practice in western North Carolina where she can "serve a much-needed population here in our mountains."
