Pair of big amendments struck down at meeting

Robbinsville – Tuesday’s meeting of the Graham County Board of Commissioners included a presentation by Rose Bauguess of the Southwestern Commission Council of Governments and Wanda Austin of Division 14 of the NCDOT.

Bauguess and Austin explained a proposed amendment to petition the federal government to add N.C. 28, N.C. 143, and U.S. 129 to the Federal Highway Administration’s National Highway System, as a way to make more funds available for the proposed Stecoah-to-Robbinsville portion of Corridor K. The motion to adopt failed.

The board also declined to discuss the Town of Lake Santeetlah’s resolution, calling for the discussion of an alcohol referendum to be put on the board’s agenda.

Other news and notes from the meeting included:

* The board then agreed to the need for a sanitation backhoe.

* The board also approved the appointment of Jason Marino to the Safety Committee and re-appointed Billy Brown to the Travel and Tourism Board.

* The need for replacements for Kerry Rogers and Claudine Gibson on the Health Advisory Board was discussed but not yet resolved. Further discussion will be necessary for this issue as well as the addendum to the personnel policy concerning supplemental insurance.

* The board acknowledged the annual fall BBQ for the Extension Office, which will take place on Nov 14 at the Robbinsville United Methodist Church, as well as the closing of government offices for Veterans Day on Nov. 11.
