Record numbers for Graham

The 2020 election was perhaps the most discussed in our nation’s history and thus, states reported new records for the early-voting process.

The same can be said right here at home, as 3,599 Graham County residents – roughly 59 percent, as there are 6,081 registered voters on the books – capitalized on the opportunity to vote early for the general election.

Between Oct. 15-Oct. 31, constituents flocked to the Graham County Community Building to pencil in their picks. The move from the normal location proved to be successful.

“About 25, 30 years ago, we had percentages like that all the time (based off the number of registered voters),” explained board chairman Juanita Colvard. “We had the best percentages in the state – little Graham County – by the way people would come in and vote. That just died and went away and I don’t know why.”

The election board also reported 468 absentee ballots were requested, with 372 – 79 percent – returned and counted in Tuesday’s final tally.
