Voice of the voiceless

Robbinsville – Now’s the perfect time to “Meet a G.A.L.”

But probably not the one that immediately comes to mind.

This G.A.L. works for the better good, speaking for those that can’t.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, representatives with the regional Guardian ad Litem program will be at the Graham County Public Library, to answer questions anyone might have about joining the cause as a part of the “Meet a G.A.L.” initiative.

“We are in-need of more volunteers in Graham County,” said Emily Heffernan, Guardian ad Litem supervisor for both Graham and Macon counties. “We have six active volunteers, with many more cases.

“We have a very strong team of volunteers, but being able to add to it would help distribute our manpower, to be able to help advocate for more children.”

A Guardian ad Litem is a person that helps investigate what is best for a particular child.

Depending on the situation, options vary, as Guardian ad Litem’s assist in cases such as custody battles, foster care and abusive homes.

Between Graham and Macon, the program only has roughly 18 volunteers at this time, Heffernan pointed out.

Last year alone, a dozen cases within this area used a Guardian ad Litem.

Friday’s event will also feature a 2 p.m. presentation, where those associated with the program will give an in-depth look into what the position entails.

“We will be there to talk and answer any questions people may have,” Heffernan said.
