Sylva – Four Square Community Action is a 2022 recipient of a combined $120,000 from the Southwestern HOME Consortium.
The Home Investment Partnerships Programs consortium awarded a total of $850,000 to four projects in the region that will construct, enhance or assist in housing citizens.
Four Square’s $120,000 will go towards assistance for landlords with upgrades to affordable rental units and to provide rental and utility deposits to tenants in Graham, Clay and Swain counties. The organization expects to help repair 10 homes and assist 75 individuals.
In Graham County, Four Square will repair five homes and assist with 33 deposits. In Clay County, Four Square will repair three homes and assist with 21 deposits.
The number of individuals assisted depends on family size and need in each county.
Community Action Agencies, like Four Square, were created when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964. This act embodies the idea that low-income individuals can best identify the problems their communities face and also develop solutions to help resolve the issues.
Through local community action and limited purpose agencies, eligible low-income individuals and the elderly in all 100 counties of North Carolina may benefit from Four Square services.
