West Fort Hill – The results speak for themselves: if you want a safe trip, Graham County Transit has you covered.
For the fifth time in a six-year span (2018, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023), the department was awarded a safety award from the N.C. Public Transportation Association. Graham County’s distinction falls under the “Community Transportation Programs > (less than) 500,000 Miles” category.
According to a release from the N.C. Public Transportation Association, winners are gauged via a formula of dividing the total miles compiled by the number of “preventable accidents” – defined as an incident where a vehicle comes into contact with something other than the road (another vehicle, person, building, tree, etc.) in a manner that is avoidable.
The agency is working to procure a new bus; additionally, the fleet is hoping to exchange 2-3 of its mid- and high-ceiling vans over the next few years.
Graham County Transit is free to use and is the only public transportation in the state that bears the distinction.
