Cherohala – A pleasant afternoon hike Saturday to Graham County’s highest mountain, Big Huckleberry – elevation 5,460 feet – turned into a rescue mission.
The Graham County 911 center received a call around 3:30 p.m. that a woman had fallen near Oak Knob and was injured. The woman and her husband had been to Big Huckleberry and were returning when the fall happened. The couple had managed to make it to Oak Knob when the woman said she felt like she was going to pass out and couldn’t make it any further.
Graham County Rescue Squad personnel reached the woman a little over an hour later and transported her by an all-terrain vehicle to the parking lot on the Cherohala Skyway. Her husband then transported her for medical care. The couple’s identities were not released.
