Charles Mayberry
Robbinsville – A Robbinsville man was shot and wounded in Lincoln County – and is facing felony charges – after he pushed his way into a Lincoln County home to check on his wife, and got into a fight with a man she had been staying with.
The shooting, which was ruled self-defense, occurred on March 5 near Lincolnton, between Hickory and Gastonia.
Charles Lee Mayberry – 34, of Robbinsville – was treated at a hospital and released and returned to his home in Robbinsville, where he was taken into custody by Graham County sheriff’s deputies on March 9.
Lincoln County deputies were dispatched when a homeowner called 911 and reported that he shot an intruder.
Mayberry had gone to the residence to see his estranged wife – who was not named – and to confront Jeffery “Chad” Freeman, 33, of Brent Trail – northeast of Lincolnton – where the woman was staying, according to published reports.
Freeman is a former Robbinsville resident.
Someone knocked and – believing her daughter was coming to visit – Charles’ wife opened the door and Charles pushed his way inside the home, where he began fighting with Freeman.
Freeman ran to a bedroom and as Charles chased him, Freeman fired a shot that grazed the side of Charles’ head. Freeman then ran to a neighbor’s house and called 911.
Charles was treated by Lincoln County EMS and transported to Atrium Health Lincoln hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
He was charged with felony breaking and entering/terrorize occupant and misdemeanor communicating threats.
Graham County sheriff’s deputies – acting on a fugitive warrant – later arrested Mayberry without incident on March 9 at his residence in Robbinsville.
He was taken before a magistrate and released on bond. He should be considered innocent unless proven guilty.
