Robbinsville – Spurned by an ever-changing landscape, Robbinsville Middle School is making sure its students are well-informed about how they can make a worldwide impact.
Today from 4-6 p.m., local and regional vendors will be set up in front of the adjoining high school entrance, at the ready for those in grades 6-8 to absorb knowledge on just how impactful an individual can be – even if they are based in Graham County, North Carolina.
“We have invited different people from the community that have done business that has a global outreach,” said Robbinsville Middle School Principal Tonia Walsh. “We want the kids to realize they are bigger than themselves and that they can make a difference in their community. It doesn’t necessarily have to be in another country, but it can be at a local or state level.”
The initiative is a partnership with Participate Learning, a group consisting of former educators and district leaders. Participate Learning has one common goal: creating global networks through educational work.
Local businesses like Phillips & Jordan will be on hand for the event, as well as missionaries. Students will be handed a “passport” when they arrive, in an effort to connect the stations together in a relatable format.
Walsh said the initiative is a multi-year assignment.
Classrooms across the institution will also begin a correlating project; one example of the initiative already being implemented at the school is students in Mrs. Mandy Adams’ class adopting a cow, which helps expands the premise of raising cattle for just beef.
“The kids just do not see a lot of work around here concerning dairy farms,” Walsh noted. “We want the kids to see that just because they want to live in Graham County, they can still have a good job.”
