Robbinsville drops heartbreaker at buzzer

Highlands – It is an all-too-familiar scenario: the Robbinsville Black Knights, involved in another nailbiter.

During Wednesday, Jan. 22’s make-up game at Highlands, the Knights (1-14, 0-8) found themselves in a 58-58 deadlock with the Highlanders (7-13, 2-2) in the closing seconds of regulation.

But Robbinsville was unable to keep Highlands from penetrating-the-paint, as the Highlanders dropped a bucket at the buzzer to pick up a 60-58 win.

Landyn Hall sank 11 points, to lead the Knights’ offense. Also scoring was Seth Lawson 10, Chris Wright 9, Clayson Lane 8, Brock Adams 7, Hunter Brooks 7, Nathan Collins 4 and Jeb Shuler 2. 

Smoky Mountain Conference action resumed Friday, with Robbinsville hosting the first-place Hayesville Yellow Jackets (17-2, 10-0). The Knights were unable to thwart the attack of 6-foot-6 sophomore standout Jake McTaggart and fell to the Jackets, 66-42.

Individual stats from the Hayesville loss were unavailable at press time.

Tuesday took Robbinsville across county lines to Murphy (6-9, 2-5). 

The Bulldogs jumped to a 15-2 advantage in the first quarter and though the Black Knights would settle in and nip at its heels, Robbinsville was unable to cut the deficit below eight for the remainder of the contest and fell, 71-58.

Hall’s 17-point night led the Knights offense. Also scoring was Lawson 10, Drey Keener 8, Wright 5, Carson Eller 5, Collins 4, Bryce Teesateskie 3, Adams 2, Lane 2 and Brooks 2. 

Junior varsity

Robbinsville (7-5) got back in the win column by knocking off Highlands 44-40 and Hayesville 45-35.

Isaac Wiggins’ 16-point game led the effort against the Highlanders. Others to score were Dasan Gross 12, Kamdyn Jordan 11, Eddie Brooms 4 and Carlos Wesley 1.

Individual stats from the Hayesville victory were unavailable at press time.

At Murphy on Tuesday evening, a break-neck pace set in quickly. Robbinsville only trailed 27-25 at halftime, but ultimately dropped the game, 68-53.

Jordan exploded for 24 points in the game. Also scoring was Gross 14, Wiggins 9, Wesley 4 and Michael Green 3.
