Robbinsville trumps Lady Cougars in season debut
Copperhill, Tenn. – Talk about starting the year on the right foot.
Robbinsville (1-0, 1-0) traveled across state lines Monday to begin its state-title quest at Copper Basin.
Except for the seventh, the Lady Knights scored in every frame of the outing, cruising to a 13-4 win over the Lady Cougars.
“Considering this was only our third day outside, we were pleased for the most part,” Robbinsville head coach Billy Knight said after the game. “Our girls played really well defensively. We hit the ball OK, but left too many runners on base. The pitching was solid and got better as the game went on.
“We got some work to do, but we got the pieces to be really good again this season.”
Though there was only one extra-base hit for the Knights in the game – a Gabby Hooper double – Robbinsville still peppered the outfield with a litany of hits.
Gracye Burchfield, Maggie Knight and Ivy Odom each drove in two runs, while Aynsley Fink had a three-hit afternoon. Hooper and Brooklyn Turpin swiped two bases each, with the Lady Knights stealing nine times in the game.
Toeing the rubber was sophomore Patience Frapp, who tossed a complete game. She struck out four Copper Basin batters and only surrendered six hits in the effort.
