Community, volunteers come together for common good
Robbinsville – As fresh fruit and vegetable costs rise, communities everywhere are combating high produce prices with community gardens.
The Church Mouse and volunteers are working on a Robbinsville-based community garden, allowing people to grow their very own vegetables, even if they don’t have their own land.
Led by environmentalist Erin Emmons, a group of Cranbrook Kingswood High School – located in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. – students worked to build 15 raised garden beds. Students from Bloomfield Hills have traveled to Graham County for 51 years.
In their time here, the students’ main goal is to provide community service to the county. This year, they hauled gravel, dirt and wood to build the garden beds.
The goal of the community garden is two-fold: to provide healthy food to the community and learning experiences for elementary school students. Along with the beds, an outdoor classroom has been built for students to learn about the process of growing fruits and vegetables. The beds are available for businesses and individuals to use. For a $20-$40 donation, anyone can adopt their own garden bed.
“While we request a donation, we are willing to work with you to get your own bed,” said Emmons.
