Robbinsville swept in post-Christmas tilt
Tellico Plains, Tenn. – Things just never quite clicked for the Robbinsville basketball program Tuesday.
A 4-game road slate in Tellico Plains ended with each Knights team on the losing end of the score column, though the varsity boys game literally came down to the wire.
Varsity boys
Robbinsville (3-5, 1-1) fought valiantly in the finale of Tuesday’s schedule, but ultimately fell 55-52 to the Bears.
Tellico had opened a 14-9 lead by the end of the first segment, but the Knights clawed their way
back into the game behind a spirited defensive effort, which picked off Tellico eight times alone in the second period; three of those coming from Xander Wachacha.
The final two resulted in back-to-back transition baskets for both Brock Adams and Kamdyn Jordan, which knotted the affair at 18-18. Tellico was afforded a 21-18 luxury at the break when Ethan Teague drained a 3-pointer at the 5-second mark.
The Knights outpaced the Bears 16-13 in the third stanza, which left the fourth quarter wide open for change to the 34-34 deadlock. A physical, heated final eight minutes ended with three technical fouls being handed out – two against Robbinsville – and though Jordan was left unguarded on the corner with 10 seconds to go, his go-ahead heave unfortunately bounced off the rim, allowing Tellico to escape with the victory.
Jordan led the scoreline with 15 points, while adding seven steals, three rebounds and an assist to the final outcome. Brock Adams had nine points, four rebounds, four assists and an assist, while both Bryce Adams and Eddie Brooms tallied seven points each.Others to score for Robbinsville were Wachacha 7, Donovan Carpenter 3, and both C.J. Ornelas and Bo Rattler with 2 each.
Varsity girls
For the first half, the Lady Knights appeared primed for a return to the win column.
But the turnover bug proved to be too much to overcome, as Tellico would pick up a 56-47 win.
Robbinsville (4-3, 1-1) had a late scoring flurry in the first quarter, which gave the Knights a 16-13 lead at the horn. The spurt spilled into the second, where Robbinsville went on a 9-0 run and held a 27-19 advantage at the break.
However, Tellico started cashing in on bad passes made in haste by the Lady Knights, with the Lady Bears tying the game 33-all on a transition basket from Darrah Wiseman. Once the game entered the fourth quarter, Tellico clung to the lead until late, when the Knights found themselves having to foul and the Bears cashed in by going 9-of-15 from the charity stripe in the final segment.
All told, Desta Trammell ran away with a 28-point game for Robbinsville, while adding a rebound and a steal to the final outcome. Zoie Shuler had nine points, four rebounds and one steal, with Yeika Jimenez putting up six points, and mixing in eight rebounds and two steals.
Halee Anderson rounded out the scoreline with four points, nine rebounds and an assist.
