Robbinsville to embark on trip for 1A gold
* State track & field meet preview
Montreat – The Black Knights track program has went the extra mile to improve this season.
Meets outside the conference adorned the schedule. More often than not, Robbinsville did not come out on the winning side of events – a by-product of competing against private and public schools from all classifications.
But from the negative, there is a positive: it worked.
Following Saturday’s Western Regional Meet at Montreat College, five of the Knights’ track & field stars are set to make the trek to Greensboro on Saturday, May 18 for the annual 1A state championship meet, which will be held at North Carolina A&T University’s Aggie Stadium. The meet begins at 9 a.m.; live updates will be posted throughout the day on The Graham Star’s social media accounts.
Many of the eyes will be on senior Zoie Shuler, who will enter the day with a chance to win four individual state championships. To do so, she will have to win the high, long and triple jumps; as well as the 200-meter dash. Shuler has collected a whopping nine gold medals from both indoor and outdoor track – and that is after failing to reach the top of the podium even once her freshman year.
She will not be alone in the pit area, either: perennial qualifier Claire Barlow returns to Greensboro for the third straight year. The junior will engage in a friendly competition with her teammate – and perhaps in a pleasant manner with the rest of the field – in the long and triple jumps.
The remaining three competitors from Robbinsville will all be making their Guilford County debuts. Senior Aubrie Wachacha punched her ticket in the discus throw; sophomore Isiac Collins is in the shot put mix; and Nathan Frederick set a new school record in the 800-meter dash at regionals to earn a spot at state.
