Black Knights sweep Eagles
Hiwassee Dam – Dampened by four postponements – the result of Winter Storm Gianna sweeping across western North Carolina – the Black Knights only hit the hardwood once last week.
Robbinsville traveled to the westernmost high school in the state Jan. 29 and swept Little Smoky Mountain Conference program Hiwassee Dam all the way, beginning with the junior-varsity girls and concluding with a varsity-boys triumph.
Varsity
The Lady Knights (9-7) avenged a 53-50, Jan. 6 home loss to Hiwassee Dam (11-8) by clipping the Lady Eagles 43-41 at "The Nest."
Abby Wehr finished with a Robbinsville-best 16 points, while mixing in 11 rebounds to record a double-double; plus two assists and two steals. Bentley Riggins also had a double-double: 10 points and 16 rebounds – as well as a block and a steal – while both Zayleigh Chekelelee and Aaliyah Wolfe dropped five each.
Also scoring for the Lady Knights was Zaelyn Phillips 3; and both Zachlan Chekelelee and Novie Dutcher, 2 each.
Brinkley Payne led Hiwassee Dam with 19 points.
In the boys' nightcap, Robbinsville (13-3) prevailed 65-56 over the Eagles (10-10).
Dane Knott kept up his hot streak by hitting 19 for the Black Knights. Others to score for Robbinsville were Nathan Frederick 17; Kristian Bauzo 12; Kyzik Teesateskie 7; Xamuel Wachacha 4; and both Kasen Buchanan and Luke Lovin, 2 each.
Jonah Dockery connected for 24 to lead Hiwassee Dam.
Junior varsity
Robbinsville (6-3) claimed the JV girls opener, 41-38.
Brooklyn Cox was responsible for 17 of the Lady Knights' points in the win. Also scoring was Haizleigh Driver 11; Emery Beasley 7; Emory Chekelelee 4; and Bella Coats 2.
The JV Black Knights (11-1) cruised to a 62-29 win over the Eagles in the following contest.
Eli Lambert paced Robbinsville's offense with 15 points. Other staking their claim were Cameron Allison 14; Landon Eddings 11; Elijah Kirkland 10; Bam Nelms 6; Trevor Jenkins 4; and Easton Shuler 2.
