Robbinsville – The Knights were well on their way to their fifth win of the season.
Mother Nature seemingly had other plans.
With Robbinsville (4-6, 4-6) ahead 11-3 in the bottom of the third Friday against Swain County (4-5, 4-5), another pop-up shower began to fall at Loudon Orr Memorial Field. Though both programs desperately wanted to finish what they started – the game’s start time was delayed one hour, then drying agents were applied to both the mound and around home plate in-between innings – the umpires finally suspended the tussle.
The Knights will host the Devils at noon today to finish the game.
Regular-season split
Rosman – Robbinsville then made the long trek to Rosman (5-6, 5-6) on Tuesday, in hopes of sweeping the season series against the Tigers.
But the Knights were unable to replicate their early-season magic – Robbinsville defeated Rosman 4-3 in extra innings May 7 – and one bad inning marred what had been a even game, as the Tigers picked up a 6-1 victory.
Rosman’s Randy Moretz scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first, but Robbinsville’s Kayden Brock got the run back by crossing the dish on a throwing error in the top of the fourth.
The tally held until the bottom of the sixth, when the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs. Rosman made good on the opportunity, as Nathan Mahoney drew a walk to score Moretz, Lawson Powell dropped a squeeze bunt to plate Tyler Stamey, Carson Lyday flew out to bring in Andrew Stamey and Bradley McCall hit a 2-run double that resulted in both Mahoney and Powell.
Robbinsville starter Jeb Shuler lasted four innings, striking out six.
