Knights senior launches big slam in victory
Bryson City – In a season where one team has already posted 11 home runs through its first 10 games, it is certainly a tall ask for someone to stand out from the pack.
But Sarah Gibby cracked that code Friday.
In the top of the third at Swain County (0-8, 0-6) – and the bases chocked full of Lady Knights – Gibby connected for a no-doubter, which went into the record books as the first grand slam of the year for Robbinsville (8-1, 6-0), as well as the senior designated hitter’s first-ever long ball.
With a 9-0 lead after Gibby’s crush, Robbinsville cruised to a 5-inning, 14-1 victory.
“It was very exciting and I was so glad to come around third base and see my friends gathered around the plate, cheering me on,” Gibby said. “That’s what made it so special – the Mudita among people.”
Patience Frapp and Zoie Shuler both had two RBIs in the win, with Aynsley Fink, Gibby and Brook Turpin each posting multi-hit performances.
Taking care of business inside the circle was Memory Frapp, who improved to 6-1 for the year while striking out six Lady Devils.
Tuesday’s road game at Cherokee was rained out and will be rescheduled at a later date.
The Lady Knights return to action today, welcoming the Lady Braves for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch at Judy Nichols Memorial Field.
