Robbinsville – Set ‘em up; the Lady Knights will knock them down.
Robbinsville (11-4, 5-1) has won five in a row, most recently toppling Highlands (8-8) in a Jan. 20 road game 59-29, before thrashing Swain County (6-12, 2-4) at home Tuesday, 61-44.
The defensive work of the Lady Knights shoulders much of the credit for the recent success. Over the last five games, Robbinsville has held its opponents to under 50 points on four different occasions. Against the Lady Devils, Robbinsville limited the opposition to a mere six points alone in the second quarter.
That’s not to say the Knights’ offense has been stagnant. Senior forward Yeika Jimenez dropped 23 points on Swain County, while also adding nine rebounds, six steals, three assists and one block. Halee Anderson had 14 points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal, while Desta Trammell recorded 14 points, three assists, two steals and one rebound.
Also scoring in the conference victory were Kensley Phillips 4 (who also posted seven rebounds, five steals and four assists); plus Delaney Brooms, Dallas Garrett and Zoie Shuler with 2 each.
High and away
Highlands – Robbinsville limited the Lady Highlanders to a mere three points in the first quarter of Jan. 20’s road tilt – and ultimately, 10 in the first half.
In stark contrast, the Lady Knights ran away with a 30-spot in the half, keeping Highlands at least 15-20 points behind down the stretch.
Trammell unloaded a 27-point evening on the Highlanders, while also notching four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Liz Carpenter had nine points, three rebounds and two steals, while Jimenez and Phillips posted eight each.
Other players to score for Robbinsville were Shuler 4, Aubrie Wachacha 2 and Anderson 1.
Junior varsity
In the only junior varsity girls action of the week, Robbinsville (0-7) fell 35-15 to Swain County on Tuesday.
Jozlyn Garland posted seven points, two rebounds and one steal. Memory Frapp had four points, two rebounds, two steals and one block, with Anna York mixing in two points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Olivia Stewart and Helen Ward made a foul shot each.
