Burnsville – The first 15 minutes of Friday's scrum between Robbinsville and Mountain Heritage lived up to the billing: the No. 2-ranked team in 2A (the Cougars) battled for every yard, as did the No. 9-ranked, 1A Black Knights.
Things took a hard left turn, though and Mountain Heritage scored 20 unanswered points to build an insurmountable lead to spoil Robbinsville's first road trip of the year, as the Cougars prevailed 50-19 at E.L. Briggs Stadium.
Mountain Heritage (3-0) needed 10 plays to march 72 yards on the game's opening drive, but cashed in the effort on a 7-yard Ervine Rodriguez rush. Robbinsville (1-2) blocked Connor Maclas' PAT, to keep the Cougars honest.
In response, the Black Knights went on a 15-play, 65-yard series that culminated with a 3-yard Isiac Collins plunge across the goal line. Zander Lucksavage then split the uprights to give Robbinsville its only lead of the night.
Mountain Heritage's next possession spilled into the second quarter and ended when Carter Bennett caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Brayden Deyton. The quarterback kept the ball for a conversion, bumping the Cougars ahead 14-7.
Back-to-back moments then occurred that are often reserved for fiction. Cameron Allison took the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a Knights score, but the point-after was no good. Mountain Heritage's Cason Jones replicated the showing with a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown of his own just 11 seconds later, with Foster Calloway catching a Deyton pass for the two-point conversion.
From there, the Cougars went on a scoring spree. Rodriguez caught a six-yard slip from Deyton with 35 seconds remaining before halftime, which was followed by Jones running in the conversion.
Jones broke free on a 78-yard run with 8:06 left in the third, before ending up on the receiving end of a 14-yard Deyton touchdown pass at the 3:09 mark.
Robbinsville finally broke its scoring drought in the fourth, when Cameron Allison brought down a 16-yard scoring pass from Luke Lovin. Mountain Heritage's final strike came when Rodriguez found the end zone on a 13-yard carry. Bennett's conversion run capped the proceedings.
The Knights now return home to face the Mitchell Mountaineers (2-1). Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.
