Andrews – After coming out on the wrong end of a shutout, the junior varsity Black Knights got back up and trudged forward.
Robbinsville (2-1) overcame some early adversity Sept. 30 at Andrews, eventually pulling ahead and ultimately prevailing 38-18 over the Wildcats.
“The game started rough, with Andrews scoring on their first two possessions,” Knights head coach Wren Millsaps said.
Robbinsville’s fortunes were reversed by a position change, which quickly injected a shot of adrenaline into the Black Knights’ offense.
“We made the change and put Adair Panama deep on the (kickoff) return and he took it to the house,” Millsaps said. “He was the spark plug we needed.
“We had some hard running by Roman Jones and Bryce Adams, both scoring on long runs. The score that broke it all loose was a bomb thrown from Bryce to Andrew Adams, with the latter dragging a defender for five yards into the end zone.”
Staying sharp
Today’s scheduled game against Hayesville had to be canceled, due to low varsity numbers for the Yellow Jackets forcing many junior varsity players to get bumped up to the next level. Millsaps’ confidence in his team meant the replacement – a road trip to Mountain Heritage – is just what the doctor ordered.
“I feel like this team will compete for state championships – plural – and I went to a team that I knew would be someone they would see in the playoffs at the varsity level,” he said. “Mountain Heritage is the cream of the crop in their conference this year and have pretty much had a running clock in every game they have played.
“To be the best, you have to beat the best and I believe our guys are up to the task. We found our identity last week, and I want them to see what competition is out there now – while the team is still young – so they can begin to manifest their dreams over the next few years.”
