Robbinsville – The middle school Black Knights finished their abbreviated season on a high note Friday, knocking off visiting Cherokee 19-6.
“I’m happy that this group got to finish their season at home, with a win,” said Robbinsville head coach Tommy Adams. “They deserve it.”
Robbinsville (2-6) started the convincing, season-sweep of the Braves early, as Quinn Jumper doubled home Cooper Adams in the bottom of the first. Jumper would then score on an error and Avery Webster drove in Bryce Adams on a single. Webster and Tillman Adams would both later come home on errors to cap off a 5-run frame.
Cherokee plated two runs in the top of the second, but the Knights widened their advantage during the bottom of the inning, thanks to Cooper Adams sprinting home on a wild pitch; Jumper coming across the dish on an error; an infield single by Aiden Adams, which scored Bryce Adams; both Aiden Adams and Tillman Adams dashing home on an error; and Luke Lovin journeying across the plate on a wild pitch.
Though the Braves got a run back in the top of the third, Robbinsville’s scoring barrage did not seize, as Jumper and Tyler Martinez both came home on a pair of one-out, wild pitches in the home half of the frame. Cherokee would cut the deficit to 13-6 in the top of the fourth, but failed to inflict further damage, as the Knights tacked on six more runs to finish the job.
“It was a short and rushed season – with little time to get prepared,” coach Adams said. “We grew as a team, and we found a group of ball players that stuck it out and kept putting in the work, even if our record wasn’t too great.
“We turned the corner in our game against Andrews (on May 10) and started playing better baseball. We are very proud of this group of boys.”
