Action tonight will determine No. 2 girls seed in tournament
Robbinsville – Even if the Lady Knights’ final home game of the regular season did not end on a high note, Robbinsville still has an opportunity to enter the Smoky Mountain Conference tournament near the top of the bill.
Only tonight’s visit to Hayesville (13-10, 4-5) stands in the way of the Knights grasping the No. 2 seed in the showcase, which will kick off Saturday and is also being held this year at Hayesville. Both the Jackets and Knights will be duking for second place in the league, which will mean a first-round bye in the tournament itself.
A win by Andrews (11-10, 5-4) at Murphy (10-14, 3-6) tonight could also give the Lady Wildcats probable cause to interject their way into the second-place argument. Andrews swept the Knights this season.
Meanwhile, Robbinsville (11-10, 5-4) went 2-1 over its latest stretch, which ended in a 77-40 loss to divisional – and defending state champion – Cherokee (19-2, 9-0) on Tuesday.
Wehr scored 11 against the Lady Braves to lead the Knights. Also scoring was Claire Barlow 7; Liz Carpenter 6; Bentley Riggins and Suri Watty, 5 each; and Jozlyn Garland, Katie-Lyn Gross and Zaelyn Phillips, 2 apiece.
Robbinsville flourished on Senior Night, limiting Swain County (4-16, 1-8) to single-digit outputs in all but the fourth quarter to exorcise the Lady Devils 52-31.
Wehr led the Knights with 15 points, seven assists, three assists and three steals. Carpenter finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds – while tacking on an assist and a steal – and Watty dropped nine points, four steals and an assist onto the visitors.
Rounding out the scoreline was Phillips 8; and Barlow, Maleah Cox, Garland and Anna Williams, 2 each.
Bobcats flattened
Cashiers – In the final Little Smoky Mountain Conference appointment of the regular season, the Lady Knights traveled to Jackson County on Saturday and delivered a 58-16 thumping to Blue Ridge School (4-12).
Carpenter emerged from the crowded scoreline with bragging rights, dropping 14 in the make-up game. Also connecting was Garland and Riggins, both with 10; Wehr and Williams, 9 each; and Cox, MyKayla McGuire and Phillips, 2 apiece.
Junior varsity
Robbinsville (6-5) fought Swain County tooth and nail from the opening tip Friday, ultimately emerging with a 30-26 victory.
Novie Dutcher paced the Knights’ offense with 10 points. Others swishing the net were MyKayla McGuire 6; Chasity Jones and Ella McGuire, 5 each; and Emory Chekelelee 4.
In Tuesday’s showdown with Cherokee, Robbinsville picked up a 42-35 win.
MyKayla McGuire hit 13 to lead the Lady Knights. Also scoring was Dutcher 10; Ella McGuire 9; Jones 5; Emery Beasley 3; and Bella Coats 2.
