Andrews – It took five sets, but the Robbinsville Lady Knights prevailed in its lone Smoky Mountain Conference match of the week Aug. 28.
Inside the raucous Ken Solesbee Athletic Center, Robbinsville (7-1, 2-0) battled from a 0-1 deficit to knock off the hosting Andrews Lady Wildcats (5-2, 2-2): 15-25, 25-17, 25-9, 21-25, 15-9.
Despite appearing in non-divisional play Tuesday, the win kept the Lady Knights in a tie for first in the league standings with Cherokee (7-6, 4-0). The two programs will meet for the first time this year Thursday, Sept. 11, when Robbinsville pays a visit to the Lady Braves.
The Knights continued to extend its dominance over Cherokee County programs Tuesday, stretching its advantage from the eastern part of the segment to the far west by entertaining Hiwassee Dam (0-7) and sending the Lady Eagles packing to the tune of a 17-25, 22-25, 22-25 sweep.
Robbinsville will travel to Bryson City today to face the Swain County Lady Devils (3-3, 1-1), before returning home to welcome the Smoky Mountain Lady Jackets (4-4) in a non-conference showdown Monday and the Hayesville Lady Jackets (7-2, 1-1) in another league match Tuesday, Sept. 9.
JV, middle school
Robbinsville (7-0) kept up its dominant junior varsity season by defeating Andrews 25-18, 25-12 on Aug. 28 and Hiwassee Dam 14-25, 14-25 on Tuesday.
The middle school Lady Knights fell in three to the Lady Wildcats on Aug. 28: 24-26, 25-12, 14-16.
A final outcome and set scores for Tuesday's match against the Lady Eagles were not received by Wednesday's press deadline. Robbinsville was 1-1 prior to the contest.
