Robbinsville – Strong hitting combined with strong pitching to create a resounding season opener for Robbinsville softball Tuesday.
Hosting the previously-undefeated Polk County Lady Wolverines, the Lady Knights delivered a quick dose of reality to the visitors with a four-run first inning. A continuous shove forward went on to crescendo in a 9-2 Robbinsville victory on Judy Nichols Memorial Field.
Dreylee Webster was responsible for bringing home the Knights’ first runs of the year, as she doubled with one out to score Suri Watty and Sophie Roberts. Presley Caylor followed with a double of her own to drive in Liz Carpenter, before Ella Atwell grounded out to plate Caylor.
Polk County (4-1) produced its only replies of the game in the third, when Junie Mitchell singled to score Tory Coile and courtesy runner Taylor Lancaster dashed home on defensive indifference. Robbinsville promptly got the runs back in the home half of the segment, thanks to Naomi Taylor launching the Lady Knights’ first homer of the year and Sydney Adams dropping a single into shallow right field to bring home Kynadee Spencer.
Watty rounded third and crossed the plate on an error in the fourth, before Caylor flew out to bring in courtesy runner Khaygen Buchanan for the final bit of insurance.
Inside the circle, Taylor shined by mowing down 10 Wolverine hopefuls.
