Lady Knights sweep through latest docket
The latest Robbinsville volleyball slate can be simplified as a cliche from another sport: nine up, nine down.
The Lady Knights ran straight through a trio of matches against Little Smoky Mountain Conference opposition: sweeping Nantahala (0-2), 6-25, 3-25, 12-25; and Hiwassee Dam (2-2), 11-25, 22-25, 14-25; in respective home matches Aug. 17 and Monday. Robbinsville (4-1) then capped the run of dominance by traveling to Highlands (1-4) and toppling the host school: 25-22, 25-20, 25-23.
After dropping their season debut in four sets to Franklin on Aug. 14, the Knights have pieced together a run that includes a rally from a 2-0 deficit to upend Asheville in five sets Aug. 15. Robbinsville will return the favor by visiting the Cougars in the return match today, before tipping off its conference-title defense at Murphy on Tuesday.
JV, middle school
The Lady Knights took their lumps in the first two JV matches of the year, but emerged with their first win of the season Monday against Hiwassee Dam: 14-25, 19-25.
Robbinsville looked to get back to .500 Tuesday at Highlands, but a final outcome was not received by The Graham Star before Wednesday’s press deadline.
A highly-touted middle-school program made its first 2023 appearance Aug. 17, sweeping Martins Creek at home: 10-25, 7-25. The Lady Knights then underwent a tough test from Hiwassee Dam/Ranger on Monday, but prevailed to improve to 2-0 on the year: 25-22, 15-25, 13-15.
