Shooting team sets sights on district tournament
Robbinsville’s shooting teams are fully equipped with the ammunition to score high at the district tournament.
Two invitationals are in the rearview mirror – the Midwest in Canton on Feb. 24 and the Far West in Marble on March 2 – and several of the competitors have a legitimate shot at qualifying for the state tournament in Ellerbe.
The Midwest gathering was attended by 14 teams. Ryan Lynn led the Knights with a score of 529 (192, archery; 187, rifle; 150, shotgun). His rifle score was fifth at the individual level. Close behind was Avery Brown, who posted a 513 (174, rifle; 170, shotgun; 169, archery).
Myley Hyde and Murphy Shanahan each finished with a 463, while Jaxon Lynn recorded a 391. Gabby Hernandez turned in a 369, with Precious Maney finishing at 175. Hernandez’s 190 in the shotgun competition was the highest in the event for Robbinsville and good for a second-place, individual tie.
All told, the Knights were 7th in the field – posting 2,481 team points (only the top five individual finishes count toward team points).
Ryan Lynn again led the pack at the FarWest, with a 585 divided between a perfect 200 in shotgun, 197 in archery and 188 in rifle. Lynn narrowly missed out on winning the shotgun event when a shoot-off was required to determine the overall champion.
Brown and Hyde both had 532; Jaxon Lynn posted a 499. Shanahan finished with 421 and Hernandez recorded 364.
The Knights’ 2,687 team points slid Robbinsville into sixth place.
The district tournament will be held Saturday at the Polk County Shooting Club.
